Slang and other powerful expressions

Some have asked me if I could list some common Japanese slang, so here are some examples. There are both words and whole sentences and it is not just rude talking or f-words, it is also examples on speech used in different situation like when you wanna sound angry, scold someone etc.

Please note that some of the words and sentences here could seriously offend people, so don't use them unless you really know what you do! They are shown here merely to make the student able to understand the language used in for instance manga or movies. OH, and another thing - if I offend someone by using bad language, well, then it was not my intention. Well, it was my intention to use the words of course, but to not to offend YOU!

Ooboke = An Imbecile / senile
Iroppoi = Sexy
Iyarashiii = Perverted / sleazy

Motenai = Unpopular (especially with girls/boys)
Iketeru = Handsome
kiza na = Affected beautiful / showing off
Iki na = Confident / stylish / sexy
Yabo na = Having no style
Yabo na otoko = A nerd
Yabottai = Devoid of taste
Dasai = Nerdy, out of fashion
Darui, kattarui, kettarui = Sluggish, uncool, it sucks
Uzai, uzattai = Uncool, it sucks
Chibi = A wimp
Busu = An ugly looking girl
Debu = A fatso
Dekkai = Fat
Pechanko = A flat something (eg. stomach)
Yappa = It figures / Oh I see (from yahari / yappari)
Kakkou = Cool, good looking
Kakkoii = Cool
Yowamushi = Spineless person
Boketto suru = Space out
Guzu = Dull / not too quick / insensitive / tactless
Noroma = Not very bright / dunce
Donkusai = Not too quick / (menatally) insensitive / tactless
Donkan = Physically insensitive
Donsai = Having low IQ

Sugoi / sugee = Cool, fantastic, wow!
Sugoku (sugoi) = Fantastically (dropping the "-ku" is typically young slang)
Gatchiri = A hunk, a well-built man
Pittari = A perfect fit
Maa maa = So so (ie. not so good)
Warugaki = A brat
Kusogaki = A brat
Kusojiji = An old fart
Kusotare = A shithead
Ijiwaru = Cruel
Mecha / mechakucha = Huge / extremley
jimi na = Plain, boring (eg. fuku)
hade na = Flashy (eg. fuku)
Shibui = Smart, fancy, sophisitcate (eg. shumi)
HANSAMU = Handsome
Kusou = Shit
Chikushou = Shit!
Yatsu = A guy
Temee ( / omae / omee) = (derogatory) You, bastard, asshole
Kisama = (derogatory) You, a guy, bastard (mostly used in manga
Yarou = Dimwit, bonehead (or softer), rascal, devil, rat
Hentai = Pervert
Oyaji (masculune speech) My father
Ofukuro (masculune speech) My mother
Sukebe = Sex fiend / pervert
Ettchi = Pornographic / lewd  (ettchi na video = pornographic movie)

Chikan = Lecher (chijo is a female chikan!!)
Otchokochoi / awatemono = Clumsy person / clod
Noroi = Slow / sluggish

Mabui = Beautiful / stunning

Various constructs

-n / -nna

This ending is used on verbs. It is similar to the "-ru na" form,
but it makes it sound a little tougher. Adding "yo" makes it even tougher.

Miseru na.
Don't show me

Misenna yo!
Don't show me!!


"Ja nai" can be come "ja nee (yo)" making it even stronger as seen below.

Monku yuun ja nee yo!!
Don't give me that crap!!

Namen ja nee yo!
Get lost! Fuck off!

Fuzaken ja nee yo!
Cut the bullshit!



-ttekanji  Like, kind of

A: Tokyo tte donna tokoro?
B: Tottemo konderu kedo ironna mono ga atte omoshiroittekanji.
A: What's Tokyo like?
B: It's pretty crowded but it's got so many things to do.
   It's kind of, like, a really exciting place.

Sugee iitenki tte kanji jyan
It's, like, really good weather!


Kireru

"Kireru" originally means cut or to be cut, but has different meanings.
Most of the time it means "get angry."  This comes from an old expression
"Kannin bukuro no o ga kireta." (meaning "I can't stand it any more")

"Kireteru" is a similar expression and used as above as well. But also it means
"being crazy". This expresses the state of some blood vessels in the head are cut.
That's how somebody go crazy.

A: Kinou kare, paatii-de kiretandatte.
B: Aa, Minnano maede joushi ni bakani sareta rashiiyo.
A: I heard that he got angry at the party yesterday.
B: Yeah, his boss made fun of him in front of other people.


Pakuri

This expression has the sense of "stealing" someone's ideas or works.
You aren't supposed to do this if you are a good artist or musician!
"Sokkuri" means "very similar to someone or something".

A: Nee, kono kyoku shitteru?  Kore madonna-no kyoku-no pakuri ja nai?
B: Un, tashikani sokkuri da yo ne.
A: Hey, do you know this song?  Isn't this song Maddona's imitaion?
B: It sure is.


-yagaru

Putting this ending on a verb makes it very violent and threatening, and
it should definitely not be used. It is used to depict violent language
in for instance translations from american movies, or for gangster language.
The more violent, the more yagaru is used.

Suru becomes shiyagaru, shiteru becomes shiteyagaru

Aitsu mou tabete yagatta. (or ...kutte yagatta)
He already fucking ate.

Ima tabete yagaru.
The asshole's eating right now.

Doko ni itte yagatttan da! Omae wa nijippun mae  ni wa koko ni
iru hazu dattan da zo!
Where the hell have you been! You were supposed to be here
twenty fucking minutes ago!

Aitsu wa honto ni suke-komashi da na. Maiban chigau onna to neteyagaru
He's a real womanizer. Sleeps with a new woman every damn night!

Temee, hito no onna ni nani o shiyagan da yo!
You shithead, what are you doing messing with my girl!

Aitsu erasou ni shiyagatte!
He's a cocky SOB isn't he?!
