Reading exercise 2a - translation

Janken
It is a game where two or more people make signs by the fingers of their hands. Three types of forms exist, called "guu", "choki" and "paa". Guu is a clenched fist representing a stone, choki is a V-form made by showing the index finger and the middle finger representing a pair of scissors, and paa is showing all your fingers representing a piece of paper. The players of the game shout "Jan ken pon" and then simultaneously give one of these signs. Guu beats choki and choki beats paa. The meaning is that the rock breaks the scissors, and the scissors cut the paper. Paper defeats the rock because it wraps it completely up. When all players give the same sign, or when all signs are given, the round is called "aiko". Or in other words, a tie. In that case all together shout "aiko desho" and try once again, continuing until someone wins. Janken is only rarely played for its own sake. Normally it is used to settle trivial matters, such as order, turns or who is "it" in a game of tag. In many cases therefore, janken is preceeding another kind of game.
